How to read a TMK
- Division (1 digit)
- The county: 1 Oʻahu (City and County of Honolulu), 2 Maui County (Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe), 3 Hawaiʻi County, 4 Kauaʻi County.
- Zone, section (1 digit each)
- Large tax map areas inside the county. On Hawaiʻi Island the first digits of a street address repeat them: 74-4909 is in zone 7, section 4.
- Plat (3 digits)
- One tax map sheet. Each plat page of this site lists all its parcels.
- Parcel (3 digits)
- The lot on the plat. (1) 2-6-001:001, 1-2-6-001-001 and 126001001 are the same TMK.
- CPR (4 digits)
- Condominium property regime unit. Units share the parcel of their building; the county adds four digits (0001, 0002…). Search the parcel without them.
- State land use district
- Every acre of Hawaii is Urban, Agricultural, Conservation or Rural (HRS chapter 205). The district decides who regulates the land before any county zoning.
- Special Management Area
- The coastal zone where the county must approve development under HRS chapter 205A, usually through an SMA permit.
- Cesspools
- About 83 000 cesspools remain in Hawaii. Act 125 (2017) requires every one to be upgraded, converted or connected to sewer by January 1, 2050.
